Red Sex-links!!

Well sexlinks are a hybrid and you only get sexlinks from the first generation cross, after that, they are just multi colored mutts. If he had, even if he hadn't know that and crossed two sexlinks together, it still shouldn't be geneticly possible to get a pure gold gened roo that looks like yours. So it must be confusion or a mix up on the breeders end.

Likely a second generation bird? RSLs don't breed the second generation in the colors of the parents, ie, they are no longer sex links. I've got a couple second generation pullets with markings in reverse of the bird shown by the OP. If the breeder told you the parent stock were Red sexlinks, that's fine. The bird you have, however, is not a Red Sex Link, just a mix, or mutt, which is also fine.

Maybe. lol I probably don't know anything! lol I got some chicks from him a while back ago and he had boys separated from the girls by color. The boys were reddish and the girls white :) So I got 5 girls 1 boy:)

That would be a likely possibility if they were a second generation cross of two sexlinks but chick1043 said the mothers were white. But if two actual sexlinks were crossed together, approximately 3/8 of the male offspring produced would be the color of the roo in the pic and that was my original theory but if chick1043 the females were white, then I can't argue with that since I didn't see them, but I can't see the genetic possibility of a white hen producing a pure gold gene male offspring unless it were recessive white masking a red color but that wouldn't be the case if sexlinks were in the cross on the mothers side.

wow. this is all very confusing to me

Hah. Yeah you probably aren't concerned with the genetic debate this turned into, but basically the point we are trying to make is that Red Sexlinks males are white so your red roo isn't a Red Sexlink, just a pretty mix and if you like him and if he works for what you want him for, then that's alll that really matters.

But I'm just curious, theses that he had separated as white hens that you bought 5 of, did they actually turn out to be girls ? Do you have pics of them ?

Did you actually end up with 5 girls 1 boy? I'd expect you to end up with 5 boys and 1 girl given the colors. If not it is very interesting.

Genetics experts does this make any sense? Sounds backward to me.

I got my RSL hens from TSC 2 years ago. Milly Bean(died last week),Molly(culled spring 2011 for egg binding and infection),and Beatrice(still alive and a witch). Good brown egg layers, but intolerant of any chickens I have added to the flock. Let me see what I got uploaded.A pic when I had just the three....
