Red shouldered hawk sitting on my run...

Try adding a few little wind whirligig...can be anything like a pinwheel or even cd's strung up, above the run. It should keep the hawk from landing on it. Also, I think that fake owls will keep hawks away too.

Feed the crows.
Crows can't stand having a hawk anywhere nearby. The crows have never bothered my chickens. Just the opposite. I think they've become good friends.

Thanks for all of the great advice. I brought them back out this afternoon and sat in the run with them. A few of them didn't want to leave their dog crate that I use to carry them outside. I finally convinced everyone to come out and then they all hung out around my feet until they felt safe

I think I am going to leave the dog carrier in there too. They definitely feel safer in there. I will try the tarp/owl ideas as well!

Thanks so much!

I have some shade cloth over my run. We have lots of hawks here. They are locked up at night and the shade cloth is the heavy kind from Lowe's and works great for daytime and of course keeps the hot fl sun from beating down on them all day long. The chickens still get plenty of slanted sunlight through the side of thier run and I have a small tarp at one end in case we get rain and they can stay dry and still be outside.
