red shouldered yokohama chicks not going to make it

today marks the last of the red shouldered yokohamas chicks,it took 7 days of trying to find a cure on whats killing the yokohamas,all dead,im bring the remaineing 5 little chicks to L.S U vet for a autopsy,to find out why this happen,they came from crackle hatchery. I did everything for those little chicks,they lost,hope its not a disease that came from the hatchery,if it is they will be notified for sure

What are their symptoms?

head is lower,wings are droped a few hours after that dead,i thought it was the chick starter buy i also have other chicks,they are ok,dont know it that contracted the illness from the hatchery,bringing the dead chicks to L S U vet to see how this happen

I forgot to ask how old they are and if you have tried treating for coccidiosis in case it was that.

they were 1 week old,added sulmet to water,change chick starter to another bag,24%,make sure they were warm all thru the week,still they died off sometimes 1 or 3 a day,unless they caught it at the hatchery,dont know,i'm raising baby chicks now,seperet from them,no proublem with them,all live and they are local,i have some red jungle fowl comming from the same hatchery,if they dont suvirve,just in case i will do something for sure,,,calling the pourtry dept at L.S.U this morning maybe they cam tell me somthing

When I order a batch of 25 chicks (I have ordered from several hatcheries) I usually will lose 2 or 3 from some unknown reason early on...l assume it is shipping stress. Sometimes more than that if the weather is very cold when I receive them (or very hot).

The latest I have lost a chick for no reason that I could figure out is 3 weeks old. So it does happen and especially if they get shipped through some hot or cold weather.

I am sorry for your losses and am just mentioning this since you may never find out why they passed on...shipping chicks can be stressful on them and no matter what you do- even if you do everything by the book sometimes you just lose some of them.

Some of them may have an internal genetic defect where they just weren't meant to make it, and other times they just can't take the journey. It is better to hatch your own from eggs of course but I do enjoy receiving chicks in the mail so I will continue to order chicks.

I have ordered from McMurray, Welp, Ideal, Mypetchicken, Cackle, and bought them from the feed store which I think was Privett. There may be another I don't remember....

I would order from any of those hatcheries again and was pleased with all of them. So don't hesitate to get yourself some more chicks and try to mend your broken heart. They can never be replaced but the new ones do help take away the pain.

Oh and I forgot to say that I would call the hatchery and mention that they died and see if there is anything they can do for you. Maybe not, but at least you can try.

i hate to lose any chicks but to lose 18 in a week,dont know about that,from the same crackle hatchery,i have red jungle fowl comming friday,hope this dont happen again,and i email them and told what happen,no reply yet, who raise red shouldered yokohamas?

Also too, since I have no way of knowing if you know this...here are the temp. requirements for chicks (because there are many who have not heard this):

90-95 the first week and decrease by 5 degrees per week until fully feathered even on the head around 6 weeks. They need space to get away from the heat - to a cooler part of the brooder. If they are huddled under the light they are cold.

Chicks will die easily from overheating and I have seen many people keeping their brooder at 100 degrees which is too hot. You can keep it hotter than 95 under the light if brooding in a very large area like a shed where they can get away from the heat way over to the side.

Well this probably isn't the problem but I thought it may be helpful to mention it.

If you have raised lots of chicks and know all this then please do forgive.

Hmm I am not sure what else to think of for what could kill that many chicks at a time....make sure they are not under a teflon coated bulb as those kill chickens.
