I have a very small flock. Recently I noticed that one hen had faded looking red 'streaks' of color on her legs...didnt think much of it as I thought maybe she bumped herself. Shortly after, her and one other hen both had what appeared to be red 'wounds' on the inside of their legs just above their ankles. It looked as if something had just bit a chunk out of them. The next day it was scabbed over. I thought this odd, but figured it was healing and that they must have done something to themselves. The scabs are thick. Now I notice red streaking on a third hen and I am hoping I don't find her with open 'wounds' next.

What could this be, a bacterial infection of some sort?

Does it stay on their legs, or can it affect their whole body as they roll and dustbath in the dirt.

My coop is kept clean. I use hay and change it frequently. I read about mud fever, however they are not let out in the rain, and their outside run dries out quickly. I pooper scoop up after them 1-2X per day.

If it is some sort of a staph or bacterial thing- how do I treat the soil to prevent them from catching it again. Its is impossible to move their coop and run anywhere else in the yard....

Ideas greatly appreciated.

I can aquire pics if necessary....

If you think it might be some little bug try dusting with some DE. I keep a dusting box filled with wood ashes and haven't had any infestations yet. Good Luck
