Red Star Chickens

Kaugomu,

How well has your Red Star handled the high Texas heat? Do you provide mid day shade? We just got six Red Stars at eighteen weeks of age to add to our flock of six Silver Laced Wyandottes. The Wyandottes are now 22 weeks old and we are waiting for their first eggs. One of the six Red Stars started laying within a couple of days after we got them home. I suspect all six of the Red Stars are from different broods. They are all different sizes from tiny to pretty large. Their coloration is very different between each chicken. They are the friendliest and they talk a lot when we are around. Nice Chickens!

My biggest concern is the 100 plus degrees most of the summer here in North Texas.

Our run has some shade throughout the day, but otherwise it's mostly sun. My read star is probably one of the most heat tolerant of the group. I ad ice to their water, and have moved their nest boxes to the run rather than the coop so that there is a hope of airflow through them. I generally find a lot of the tips and tricks here pretty helpful: http://www.fresh-eggs-daily.com/2012/03/beating-heat.html

Good luck!

Okay y'all convinced me. I have a mixed young flock my eldest (2 EE) should start to lay around September (counting the days). I have a mix of younger gals with an outstanding order from MyPetChicken of a replacement Barred Rock and 2 Welsummers..ta da with a male to boot for Hubby who has been a trooper through this poultry adventure I undertook. I have added a Golden Buff (Red Star) to my order, they sound a perfect blend. Thanks for the advice and I'll be tuning in with baby pics as soon as they are available.

Nap time :) so sweet and peaceful when they are sleeping

I just put the nest boxes in the run two days ago with the expectation that my 15 red stars would start to lay in five weeks or so. I can't believe one laid an egg already. They are only 14 weeks and 6 days old. This is the youngest I've ever had a pullet start to lay. Beautiful dark brown egg.

I got my first little red star in Tuesday from My pet chicken.com. She is so cute, but a rough welsummer pecked at her eyes and now they are shut. No crust etc but she keeps them closed and wanders about to find her food and water. So hoping its short term.
