I have a hen that has a red swoolen area the size of a small tennis ball. It seems to be filled with a watery liquid. I probed it with my fingers and it didn't seem to cause her any discomfort. She only has a few feathers in this area. There was some fesces in the area so I think she's been pooping. Our chickens are free range so I hadn't noticed it before, You can only see it if she's facing away. She eats, drinks and gets around alright and seems pretty normal. Any ideas? Thanks

We call that part the vent

Im not sure what the problem is.. hopefully someone else will know. Good luck.

Sounds like prolapsed vent. Sorry I'm not good at the medical questions. Hopefully someone will come along. Till then can you post a pix, and add more info? See the sticky at the top of the forum page.

Good luck

hi im not trying to nasty but a picture of the area would help alot it may be a spider bite an infection we really dont have that much information to go by so more details and a picture would help alot

Hello It's me hwally. I'm down in mexico, literally in the jungle and have no camera or a vet nearbye. I've dealt with spiderbites and see no sign of a bite. Her skin is smooth except where her feathers are. The swelling goes right up to her vent but doesn't seem to include it. I don't know if I'm responding in the right way to this. I'm not to good on computers

I have a 13 week old Sal. Fav girl that is so fluffy that when she poohs it gets stuck in her feathers around her vent . Anyway her vent looked more irritated than infected, so I just bathed her with tearless baby shampoo, and put some Iodine solution on her and some plain anti-biotic cream on her and rubbed it in very gently. I checked today and all the redness and swelling was gone, So maybe a warm sitz bath and some anti-biotic cream might help. Ive also heard that Hemoroid cream works too for bringing down the swelling if it is a prolapse? Bailey's little vent also looked like a blister almost but translucent. Anyway good luck with her, hope she feels better! Sandy
Sorry if this wasn't much help, Im still learning about all this. All I got to go on is personal experience. LOL and that ain't much.

Hello. It's me Hwally again. I read up on prolapsed vents and I don't think hers is. Her vent isn't protruding. It looks pretty normal. The swoolen area is just in front of her vent. It feels the same way a water baloon feels. I probed it and cant feel any hard material. It seems to be liquid. Thanks

I must have misunderstood what you were saying, I sure hope you can figure it out or someone can come on and give you some insight on the problem. Sandy

Does
it look like that? Except more swollen with a fluid feeling? It 'could' be ascites, which is a fluid buildup, and not a disease or disorder but a symptom of something more going on. How old is this hen? Is she laying? When was the last time? Is she eating and drinking ok? Acting normal?

Sometimes the ascites will build up and the entire vent, and abdomen will be swollen. Some have had success in removing the fluid with a needle. I'm going to try to find those posts for you to see if it will help at all.

BTW, I'd love to VISIT where you are, but don't think I wanna live there.

Sounds like a unique experience for those of us that live the civilized life. Would you care to posts more about your experience there at some point? Are you living there on a mission trip or is this your birth home? If I'm being too personal, please ignore my questions.
