hello everyone,

are there anyways to deter hawks from attacking my girls. i have two big roosters but last time the hawk swooped in on them they ran the other way.

luckily i was standing in the yard and the girls ran for me.

any help would be great.

blessings and light

blank dvd's, pie pans, plastic bags. All help. no guarantees but worked for me. I also added 2 goats and they have stayed away.

Build a large run with top. to keep hawks out. If you free range, have lots of places they can run and hide - bushes, maybe outdoor equipment they can run under, obviously the roos are no help and probably too busy running to sound an alarm. Get yourself some Livestock guardian dogs.

thanx for the info

i put some cd's up the other day i'm hoping it works. i do have 3 pairs of ravens that hang out around my place. i have seen them chase the hawk off on a few occasions. they share the bread i feed to the chickens

does anyone knw if turkey vultures will try to attack a chicken. i have alot of them in the area.

good call drumstick,

i have my coop next to my dog house so i think it helps some. they do have a good amount of things to hide under and brush to scuttle under. i just dont trust the intention of these birds of prey, i dont think they want to befriend my brood

I have two goats in my small pasture where my chickens "free range" and I've never had a hawk problem. Don't know if it's a coincidence or not. I also have a rooster to warn the girls but I've never seen one near and we certainly have plenty around.

I don't believe the turkey vultures are any threat to adult hens though I wouldn't put it past them to go for a chick, even though they are primarily carrion eaters.

i remember reading somewhere that in china they capture the hawk, tie up its claws and wings and let the chickens peck at it for a bit. when they release the hawk it never shows itself again on the farm.. i dont think i would want to try and handle an angry hawk;)
