Redcap Chickens

EweSheep, I keep going back to that link and looking at the 'redcap' chicken. It is starting to grow on me!

If and when you DO decide on eggs and chicks, be sure you do your homework and get them from reputable breeders, not hatchery stock. The combs are lacking in this breed, thats the problem with hatchery birds.

Thanks for the 'heads up'. I think for now I will just look at them. I have more feathered friends than I know what to do. I need to update my sig line because right now it is giving false info.

I am VERY interested in obtaining some Redcaps. I have a 4 week old from McMurray, but I would like to start a flock with more original English lines. I would be grateful for any info or for anyone selling eggs.

Wow, I never noticed this thread before. . . I'm VERY happy to see more people interested in them, I'm sure quite a few pass them by in the catalogs like they do every other uncommon or unpopular breed (

) but at least we now have some fans.

Redcaps are an extremely rare breed in desperate need of saving, and the first thing to do and keep in mind with is try and steer away from hatcheries as much as you can.

They don't breed for the standard at all, so especially with rare breeds, the first thing you may notice is their lack in substance/size.

I'm glad to have found this thread, too. I have a roo and 3 Redcap hens and have been trying to find a comprehensive standards listing. It's hard to find solid info but was neat to read the chat from a couple of years ago. I wonder how the chicks from that time developed?

This is himself about a year old. If anyone feels the urge to critique, please feel free. I will not be offended and will probably learn something. The hens I adore they are so friendly, curious and much smaller than he is.

Please excuse the bare necks on a few of the hens... he's kind of rough and pulls them out.

]I have no pride left and might as well show my ignorance once again. Where/how do you suggest I do my homework regarding finding reputable breeders? I really would like to find Dom and Redcap (perhaps Ap-Spithauben) stock to improve what I have. Hatchery is obviously not the way to go now, although my adult birds all were hatchery. A few I added this year from "breeders" but have no way to judge their worth yet.
Thanks for your patience.

Hi flitter

You have some very nice looking Redcaps. I have 21 Redcap chicks 5 males and 16 females. My Redcaps are two months old and are from Ideal Poultry (hatchery stock but I am very happy with them

). I will get a few pictures and post them tomorrow.

I think they are neat. I've had these 2 years. They came from McMurray. I've just enjoyed them and their eggs up until now. I have three breeds (Doms, Redcaps and Appenzeller-Spitzhauben) and have recently added coops and runs to separate them. I'd like to do some hatching, culling and mix in some new bloodlines.
