I have been working on a new coop/run for the last few months. I want one more automated and cuter than my current. I was wondering if anyone has a split coop for ducks and chickens?
My idea: an 8X8 shed (not a kit) with a second level inside. The ducks would have the whole floor area with a door off one side to their run. The chickens would have the elevated second level that takes up half of the shed (4X8). This would be enclosed with hardware cloth with a door that opens for cleaning. The chickens would have their own run off the other side.
So everyone would "share" a coop, but still be separated (to stop male duck rapage). I am trying to make the best use of space and save some money by not having two separate coops. I have 3 acres but can only put the housing in a small area of the yard due to zoning regulations.
I know this will make a lot of moisture in the coop so I plan on adding a lot of top ventilation and windows. It will be walk in for cleaning. Can hold 16 ducks and 8 chickens in theory, plan on housing 6 ducks and 6 chickens. Can anyone think of other issues with the setup.
I plan on separating the birds with hardware cloth just in case a predator would get into one side, it would not kill all my birds. I'm also thinking on how to add a brooding area in the coop.
Ducks: Magpies
Chickens: Light Sussex, D'anver, Brahma and Cochin large fowl
