It's Em's Fault !!! It's Em's Fault !!!

I was perfectly content to be another gray chicken blending in with the crowd........ but Em just had to suggest I might want an avatar.... (someone mentioned Em doesn't like plain gray chickens).....so I added an avatar. And now I've changed it !!! And I may change it again tomorrow ! Gosh I've got so many neat pictures to choose from ! So if you get overloaded from me changing avatars every few days........ Blame Em !!!!!!

Mama always said I was born in a barn.

Gritsar just for you! The coop in my avatar was built two years ago from genuine early 1900's Kentucky tobacco barn siding I salvaged (could still smell the cured burley smell in the boards). The roofing metal came from an old 1940ish garage and the door I picked up along the highway from a pile of goodies set out after a remodeling project. The SS sign is an actual Southern States Cooperatives sign from the 1960's and the yellow one is a 1970's Prairie Farmer sign.

Reminds me of a story about my daughter. She was raised in the mountains of NC, where burley tobacco is grown. When she moved with me to eastern NC, where brightleaf is grown, she was surprised to see that the tobacco was harvested by picking the leaves, not cutting the down the entire stalk as with Burley. I'm not sure of the exact comment she made to her classmates on her first day at a new high school, but they nicknamed her "Burley" and it's a name that has stuck to this day.

I love old tobacco barns. Lucky you!

Tobacco isn't grown here like it use to be. But I remember.

Hated suckering tobacco. Loved to spud and hang it. Nothing
smells like a tobacco barn...
