Redinator's First Hatch-Along

Anyone have suggestions for taking good pictures while candling?

I tried with my last batch, but juggling the egg, flashlight and cell phone was a bit more than my nerves could handle, lol.
I use the lid of my incubator where it has the candling spot and set the egg in while using my own flashlight to shine in from the top because my light is much brighter. With the egg snug in place I have a free hand so can take pictures if I want. Or have my kids help and let them take the photos since they take better photos.

Mine came with a seperate light. I might set them in a egg carton. I'll try different things today with eggs from the yard and see what works before I mess with the ones in the incubator.

@Mother of Chaos I figured you might want to get in on this, lol.
Haha lol, oh Lord, no. I’m limited to seven chickens by city code and already have 5!

I’m fascinated by the idea of raising chicks from eggs, but I’m even more relieved that it doesn’t make sense in my situation! -whew

It is addictive, lol. It doesn't help that there are so many breeds to 'try out' and each breed has color varieties, then you throw in crosses and mixes and then holy crap. What am I going to do with 70 chickens.

I have a friend that has various water fowl and started keeping Black Jersey Giants. Unfortunately for him, he can't keep roosters, but I can. So we agreed I'll keep a breeding flocks of his Giants and he'll take half my pullets (half of what I can't/won't sell). That way neither of us has to start from scratch if something should go terribly wrong for one of us.

He's had issues with predators which he's been working on resolving and I live in a hurricane prone area. We also live 2.5 hours apart, so if one of us wanted to go on vacation we can check on each others flocks every few days.

Do you want two game bantams? They're full of zoomies, lol.

I have about double that, although I was told that 3 bantam equal 1 chicken in chicken math, so my numbers may be actually quite lower than I thought.

I'm currently fascinated with kooky polish chickens. They are funny birds.

I have 8 bantams I'm currently 'trying out'. One is a Self Blue Old English Bantam cockerel which only get up to 24 oz. I'm concerned I won't be able to keep him since we have small hawks. I wouldn't want to keep him penned if the others are free ranging.

I currently don't let chicks out of the run unsupervised until they're 6-8 weeks old. I haven't had any losses so far using that strategy. I just don't think he'll be big enough even full grown.

Most of mine free range, but we have cover, geese, a donkey and a goat in the same pasture. I keep bantam cochins, bantam EE, and a few d'uccles, and mixes from those breeds. I haven't lost many over the years from hawks thankfully.
