Redinator's First Hatch-Along

I wonder if this is common with them, or just bad luck? I've bounced between getting zombie eggs, or Ayam Cemani and White Leghorn eggs and taking that route to making zombies. But I'd hate to have no luck.
The woman I got them from was upfront about the fact that she just started breeding them and wasn't sure what the outcome would be. If she hadn't been I would be more upset about it. They were $50 for a dozen, which is cheaper than I've seen from other sellers.

I'd rather give someone starting out a chance, and she's appreciated my feedback and sending her links to the candling videos so she knows she needs to make adjustments, either another male or less pullets.

She also lives close by so I don't have to worry about having them shipped if/when I decide to get chicks from her next spring whens she hatches some.

That's good that you found an honest seller who is appreciative of your feedback and didn't try to give you unreal expectations.

And yeah, they're so expensive. I mean, the chicks on Meyer are $68 each.

Maybe with some adjustments on her end, you can get bets results next time.

I'm thinking if I need more pullets I'll probably get them from her, but if I need a male I'll probably purchase it somewhere else to avoid inbreeding. Still early though, they still need to make it out of the shell :fl

That's why I'm going to get my next Orpingtons from a local breeder in the spring. I want to breed for the BBS genes, so I got just 3 pullets and 1 male from Meyer. Obviously though, he's going to need more hens than that. But I'm thinking if I get the others locally, I can avoid inbreeding as well. I've read it's not as big a deal with chickens, and I'm sure that's true. But I don't think the diversity could hurt anything.

I hear that too. I'm not sure about the dynamics in the wild, but I imagine older males would get run off or killed by an unrelated male that comes in to take over the flock and young cockerels born in the flock would be chased off, therefor they wouldn't be breeding their mothers and sisters.

Kind of like cats. The youger males we haven't been able to trap and neuter disappear as they get older. They'll be gone for months then reappear. It's like they'll go looking for ladies and then come back. The females here are spayed, so they couldn't breed with moms or siblings, but I think that instinct is still similar. Dominant male runs them off so they go find a new group of ladies.
