Redinator's Project 365

I'm curious as to where the kit came from, I've never heard of water dishes for them.

Use the dish for the fruit. They need a fruit or vegetable for a moisture source. I would get one of those long carrots and break it up. I place it in the left side, center, and right side of the tank on a piece of plastic netting, but you can place whereever you want. You will have to stick your hand in minimum once a week to swap the carrot out before it goes moudly. It's icky but soap and water on your hands is well worth it.

So long as the carrot is moist, they'll get the water they need.

I really should write a new and improved mealworm article, there's some lessons that I've learned from the last few years.

They will start to smell at some point. If you've got a garage you might consider putting them out there. Ants will attack them if they can get them though. I've had that happen a few times.
This is the kit I bought: https://www.chewy.com/exotic-nutrition-small-animal/dp/312959

I'm glad you mentioned the ants because I was thinking about putting it outside. Next best place would be the bathroom since it's stays fairly humid in there and I could turn on the vent when I'm cleaning out the bedding and kicking up the smell. Currently it's sitting on my night stand next to my bed . . . I'll probably move it in the next few days when I start incubating eggs again.

Do you have a link to the current article? Outdated information is better than sparse, lol.

Don't get it too humid otherwise it'll rot the bedding. You don't need to really take the bedding out much, once a year and sift the worms should be fine, if it gets low, top it off with some extra. I use oatmeal.

Oh my. PLEASE get that thing out of your bedroom. I guarantee you it's going to make your room smell amazing. I used to have mine in my room and The Siblings wanted to run me over.

Well I've raised chicks in my bedroom, mealworms can't be much worse, lol. I'm in the process of setting up outdoor brooders for the chicks because it did get to be a bit much when I got up to 20+ at a time, lol.

I was gonna ask if the pine shaving I use for the chickens would be a good substitute when the bedding that came with the kit runs low . . .but oatmeal is easier . . . I guess they can eat it too . . . ?

I'll check out the article, thanks.

The bedding needs to be edible. That way they get fat and yummy.
I'll check out the article, thanks.
You're welcome!

This will be pretty cool! Once the chickens are done snacking on various melons in the summer I can toss the rinds in for the mealworms. I read and saved both articles, yours and the other one you suggested. Thanks again.

Yah they'll love the rinds. Let me know if you need any more worm advice.
