My 2 chicks are going on 3 weeks old now. (They may be about 2 1/2 now) I know you are supposed to drop the temps 5 degrees per week but I don't know when or how I should start turning off the light. Once I get to 75 should I just turn it off for good? Can I start turning it off at night yet? They are in my house in my computer room so it doesn't ever get cold.

What is the temp outside? It all depends.. I can give some advice if I know what the general temp is.

In general.. You can start turning it off at night. When you get it to reach 70 degrees you can take the lamp out as long as the area outside your brooder isn't to cold... Just remember your chicks are your best thermometer. Huddled under the light, to cold.. spread away from it to hot. GOOD LUCK! I have done this several times with no issue. It would be interesting to see what others do.

Outside as in outside the house? I'm in Florida so the temps are fluctuating like crazy right now....50-70 depending on the day. In the house it's around 65-70. In the incubator I have it at 90

chicks in general can have there heat lowered by 5 degrees each week

Start at 95° F for day old chicks. I found hanging a 250Watt infra-red heat lamp 18 inches above the floor was about right.

Reduce the heat by about 5° F per week (raising the lamps about 2 inches each week seems to accomplish this) until you get down to 70° F. After that, they should be fine on their own. hope that help you
