OK,
MY chickens have been living in my green house with an earthen floor for two months. I am still building my Coop. I was worried that all the dust they were turning up every night was bothering them. While I was at work my mom who is visiting went and bought chips. Well they turned out to be redwood.. I can't directly find anything saying that Chips are. They seem big like they won't eat them. I keep them up off the ground at night so I am not too worried about tonight. What do you think. Please site something if you find it as I can't seem to find anything... And I know CEDAR is thanks.

ahhh an Arcata person... What I wouldn't give to be back there again... I wonder if you could use shredded redwood bark for litter. that stuff is cheap up there!

Redwood is too aromatic. I'd remove it to the gardens and tell your mom it was just too pretty for chicken poop! Then replace it with kiln dried pine shavings like for horse stalls.

Seems the problems some have had with bedding is related to the dust. Kiln dried pine seems most popular, maybe rinsed off with water then dried, to cut down on dust (and potential respiratory problems for the animals).
