Breast Blister on Black Jersey Giant. Likely cause was wide roosts - rubbing of keel bone/feathers. Heavy and large bird and wide roosts were not a good combo.

Day of discovery:

2 days later, after some treatment. More treatments followed.

This is strange, but on the last cockerel I processed, after plucking him I noticed a bruise on his breast, right where he would have rested it on the roost. His roost was a 2” in diameter sturdy, smooth tree limb. He had a choice of about 6’ of the limb he could roost on, wherever he was most comfortable. Is this bruising normal? I didn’t notice a bruise on the others I’ve processed, but the other birds were younger. Although he was only about 10 months old. Your post just peaked my curiosity.

Maybe. Ours is nearly 11lbs and should get to be at least 13 lbs. A big bird. We had the wide side of a 2x4 for roosts, but this was not good for this rooster. He has a large bone structure and is large and wide overall. We have since turned the roosts to the narrow side of the 2x4. His breast blister is looking much better!
