Regarding squirrels

I think it's trial and error. Even though I am not being bombarded like I was in the fall. I know they will be back. I even caught one climbing up the outside of my house one day. They have claws.
Oh don't get me started! We live on a dead in street in a suburb. No predators other than the owls and I don't think they mess with the full grown squirrels. They will come onto my porch and look in my windows. They won't run from me until I get a couple feet away. Sometimes when they are in a mood they throw acorns at us. It's the first thing visitors comment on when they come over. Both the amount of squirrels and their bold nature lol.

No matter what you do to get rid of them others will come. Some friends of ours used to have Fox Squirrels but over the years the Gray's have moved in and now they never see any Fox Squirrels.

:welcome :frow I see you are a fairly new member. I shoot them. Here we have Fox Squirrels and Gray Squirrels. The ones that do the damage here are the Gray Squirrels. We are retired old folks. Most times our vehicles are parked for several days at a time. They have gotten into the engine compartment of my husbands truck and did damage. The Fox Squirrels just hang out. There are so many Grays, they are not endangered. Some people shoot them and eat them but I don't eat them but do shoot them when I start seeing them. They have gotten into our greenhouse and dug into the newly planted pots making a real mess. They had to go. Good luck and have fun...
Yes, new, thank you! I have eaten squirrels but, like you, not something I'd go out of my way to prepare lol. Honestly I'll have to check the ordinances on shooting them in my city. If it's doable I may ask my friend's husband to come and thin the herd. They will just get replaced with new ones but maybe instill a reasonable amount of fear of humans. I don't know if that's how that works lol.

Yes. A losing battle. They will always be here. Seems like a good idea to try deterrents and grow more than I need in hopes of actually getting enough out of the garden. *shrug*

where i live we have them little reds, fox and the odd grey.

but they sure can be bad, have a friend who is a trapper far up north, told me the only good squirrel is a dead squirrel lol, i have eaten one before (a red one not much meat but sure tasted good)

check with your seasons lots of places have a squirrel season for hunting or trapping. where i live there is only a trapping season for them but as a trapper i can legally shoot or trap them in season with no bag limits.

I still haven't looked into seasons and whether I can trap or not but I will be. Honestly they wouldn't bother me half as much if they had the decency to run from me lol. At least show a modicum of respect.:barnie

We've tried traps, hot pepper spray and anything we could think of over the years and nothing has worked.
This year we finally broke down and purchased row covers (thin white fabric) it's ugly and I hate having the garden covered but it's working. Been a few months with cold weather crops and so far nothing has been touched.
