I have a rooster (was sold as female) that I need to rehome. I have had a lot of difficulty finding a "good" home for him. I've asked people to send me pictures of the coop/run so that I can be sure he will be cared for. I've posted to craigslist and many people have flaked on me. Do I need to worry about people using him for cock fights?? Someone told me they exist even though they are illegal. Thoughts???

What breed is he? Have you advertised him as pet only? Really you have no control over what people do to him after he is out of your care. All you can do is try to find him a good home. Is there maybe a 4-H club somewhere around you that would take him? Also why do you need to rehome him?

I don’t think that he will be used for cock fights but I think that you are doing a good job of making sure he has a good home! I would mabey post on your local chicken reining group on Facebook! Or you could contact you chicken freinds : )

What people do with him is impossible to know. They could eat him, kill him, use him in cock fights (which do still happen) or they could give him a happy life. Is there someone you know that might take him?
As i said, cock fights are still happening, people do illegal things all the time unfortunately :(.

He is black laced wyandotte. I don't know anything about 4H but maybe I can find out. I am in Baltimore City and posted on BYC also. Here is a pic of him. He's a sweet boy and I hate doing this to him!! Unfortunately we live in the city where we are not allowed to have roosters and he's started crowing (so the jig is up)! If anyone here knows of someone or can put the word out further than I've been able to it would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people in your same boat with a surprise cockerel (or many) that they're trying to rehome. I've seen constant posts on here, Facebook, Craigslist of people trying to give up their cockerels/Roosters.

When you ask for photos of people's coops and question how they will care for him... you'll get a lot of people who will drop communication with you because they can get roosters so easily elsewhere.

Most likely the people wanting to take in unwanted roosters are planning on eating them. I know a family that does this. They look for "free roosters looking for a new home" and they do NOT have a coop. To them, it's free food for their family.

You can certainly try to find him a home with people who will keep him as a pet but just don't expect to be picky with who will want to take him. Always have a plan for the surprise male chick. Good news is he's a handsome wynadotte so maybe you'll find someone wanting to breed. Good luck!

I hadn't thought of selling him as a breeding pair. He hasn't actually started breeding yet. In fact he's terrified of most of my other hens (with the exception of the girls he has been with from the beginning in the brooder). We all laugh at how he gets pushed around by the girls. He's already bigger than most of them and only crowed for the first time over the weekend. Such a bummer that I can't keep him.

I spoke with someone else today. He sounds like a nice option. He does have a few other cockerels already. He said he would place him nearby where they could all see each other for a few days and then integrate him. Does this sound okay? I'm getting desperate as I don't want one of my neighbors to call the city.
