Hello - I am Caroline -
I had recently started raising Golden Lace Wyandottes. Until yesterday 2 weeks old- I had 3 beautiful little chicks - The dog got into the coop while I was cleaning the brooder and Played with them -One is lost and two are in shock.
I had 2 chicks before - in College - part of a biology class assignment and our eggs hatched unexpectedly - sort of. I took them home - Rhode Island Reds. For about 3 weeks and after 3 weeks my Mom made me give them to a friend with a farm - They ate them - Roosters both. Whoops... I sure I did everything wrong and they did pretty well. So I know Chickens are kind of like goldfish - hearty unless you completely ignore them. I am always amazed to see goldfish swimming under the ice in a trough or frozen pond.
Okay - Hadn't wanted to go on so much. My husband ordered 4 (1 rooster 3 hens) more chickens in case the two I have left don't make it. My hope is that we will have 6 fine birds. I posted on the emergency care page.
It was not the dogs fault. I have an a-frame coop - the side panels were down so the birds were protected but the end door came open and in a flash - he was in. Cocker Spaniel - they are hunting dogs. He plays with the cats and everything else. I just feel bad - my fav chicky died. He didn't kill her but hurt her when he mouthed her and she died in my hand. My husband told him to drop it and he did. He got to all three in a flash.
So - Hello - sorry for the sad news. The other chicks come around the 20th of july - I will definately be reinforcing the door latches on the coop and also using some sour apple when the dogs go near the coop and training them to leave the birds alone!
