Releasing Coturnix? WHAT?!?

It Can Be A Scarey World Kids....

I Have No Idea About Most States, But Here In Florida They Would Put You Under The Jail If They Ever Found Out, And That Was Before The Great Snake Round Up! Now They're Even More Dead Set On It. Also Most Folks Just Dont Realize, Releasing Birds Comes Under The Auspicies Of Fish And Game(dnr, Fish And Wildlife, Whatever It Is In Your State) As Well As Federal Fish And Wildlife In Many Cases...

The Punishments In These Cases, As Prosecuted By These Agencies Tend To Have A Way Uglier Penalty Involved Then Say... Selling Crack, Or Rape, Or Murder ( I Have No Idea Why, But It's Always Been That Way...)

It Is A Sad Fact That There Seems To Be A Great Lack Of Knowledge About Laws On This Activity.... And Ignorance Of The Law Is No Excuse If Prosecuted. I See So Many Posts On Here Questioning "do I Need A Permit?" Or "can I Turn These Loose?" Etc... And Most Of Us On Here Use The Site Frequently And Should Know To Check Before You Buy. It Seems More Widespread In The General Public.

Many Folks Like The 1 That Contacted You Mean Well--- They Think "its A Quail, They Occur In The Wild Every Day, They're Cute And I Could Hatch Them And When It Gets Bigger I Can Just Let Them Go And It Will Help Nature Out While I Get The Satisfaction Of Raising It" I Guess In Our Well Meaning Nature It Can Also Lead To Unknowing Destruction Of An Ecological System. This Person Probably Doesnt Know The Difference Between Coturnix, Bob White And Mountain Quail--- The Just Have No Clue, All That Caught Their Eye Was "quail Eggs"

The biggest reason IDNR tells me is they are afraid of your birds carrying a disease that will spread to wild stock when released into the wild. Non native species may have no natural predators and can overpopulate very fast. I understand the concern but they (State and Feds) are worse than the general public. Ever hear of gizzard shad? They imported them for baitfish and in a few years took over many lakes and rivers in the midwest. Now they kill all fish in lakes and restock to control and who pays for that? How about the Honeysuckle bush? It was brought over from asia I think to put along roads to help control erosion. Now in Indiana and other midwest states it is killing out all native flowers and trees because it spreads like wildfire and chokes out all other ground cover. Never a good idea to release a raised animal or plant into wild but they need to abide by their own rules.

Too bad you can't have "just a little" of those - I like how they smell in spring/early summer but I hate how they climb my trees at the edge of the woods and kill them and take over so that you can barely walk through them or you trip and break a leg.

They totally kill out the trees at edges of woods - then when those are gone, they move right in further. I'm amazed that I have any woods left beside my house.

If anyone has a clue how to kill that honeysuckle, PM me Please!!

Here in Indiana at Rural King they have a product called stump and vine killer. You cut the branch (one per plant will do) and pour this on the cut. The plant absorbs it and it dies in a few days. Other than that we pull it by the roots with our backs or four wheeler. Its bad stuff isn't it. It has destroyed the woods where I deer hunt. Brad

Yes they will eat the young tender shoots but it dies off and destroys other foliage that deer feed on as well. It stops the sun from getting to other plant life in the woods or perimeter of the woods. I used to have an awesome mushroom patch but the honeysuckle bush took-- over no sun, no light, no mushrooms!! After a couple years you can not even walk to the spot anymore without crawling to it.

as my dad always said to us kids, "good intentions and 25c will still only get you a cup of coffee". I don't think any dept of wildlife official would care what your intentions were, only what could happen as a result of your actions.
