Relocating raccoons- questions

Chickencharmer - I know it is unlikely in CA, but here in the south there are some people who view coon as a food source

(large rats if you ask me). You might search around, possibly criagslist, and see if you have any takers. Then trap the nasty thing and let someone take it off your hands. Unless your dad is vegetarian maybe he will go for the whole "circle of life thing".

We had a racoon get all 4 of our ducks. He got under the pen and pulled them out. My husband saw him the one night and he was big. In our area you can not relocate them, but we can trap them. Tuna fish is what was suggested to us then take care of it. Like putting it in the trap inside a trash can with water in it. Then bury it on our property some place. Be careful of rabies with racoons. I don't want him getting any of my hens, and so far safe there, but they are locked up in the coop at night. I have heard racoons only look for food at night. ok, I am wondering first, HOW the coon got the cockateil O_O

why would you keep a cockatiel outside, or take it outside??

and two, I am all for relocating, take them somewhere like a wildlife area and release them.


it is not the animals faults they get the chickens, it's the humans who don't take the time to protect them.

Funny how those who exterminated predators complain when people against it post in their threads- saying its bashing. Moderation even steps in and says dont post unless you are helping the OP in those threads.

SOOOO....this OP asked specifically about relocating and gets bashed by some and urged to kill. When I go into killing post and urge NOT to kill I get told to step out of the thread. Hmmmm........ Some of course are offering respectful advice.

Seems like you cant win in the Predators and Pest forum.


OP, you do what you feel is right, just like these other people do what they feel is right. I prefer to predator proof my cages and coops so that I do run into these problems. We have coons, weasels, hawks and the few loses Ive had were form free ranging times. I hope you dont have to go through loosing anymore. (I know those in bear areas have more trouble and tend to use electric fences).

And to add, please do bash me for my thoughts. The OP asked a specific question to which I answered my opinion, just as you all did.​

The reason people were "bashing" is because when you haul off and dump a predator, not only is it illegal in most places, you are doing nothing to take care of the problem....you're just moving it on down the road to someone else. It may not be your problem anymore, but you've made it someone elses.

My pens are predator proof too....at least as much as you can possibly make them. But there will probably come a time as it has in the past, that some critter does get in.....just as it will for you. What will you do then? Dump it up the road from me? I don't like to kill animals either, but there is a time an place for it. I dare say your feelings on it may change when you find your birds dead in their pen.

I agree, no bashing. The OP wants information--we can have our opinions, but let's not be too harsh. Also realize that the OP is a teenager and her dad, not her, is making the final decision on how to take care of the raccoons. So no use bashing, anyway--it's not her choice.

For what it's worth, my two cents: I'm a vegetarian, and have been for nearly 15 years. I have a lot of reasons, one of which is the humane treatment of animals. I don't even eat fish/seafood. I shoot and kill raccoons. Why? It is the more humane thing to do. More humane for my chickens, more humane for the raccoons, and more humane for other folk's animals (and the other folks) that I would be endangering if I dropped them of somewhere else.

OP, maybe you just oughta show your dad this thread.

It is not bashing to remind someone the illegalities associated with their actions. In respect to the person who made this post, I won't go into any details how I rid myself of Racoons. I would go and check with their cities Animal Control and ask to legally dispose of these predators. Unfortunately these animals can travel for miles and miles in a day. So, where you drop this critter off, might never be his new home.
Racoons are vicious critters. They have no natural predators. They'll kill for fun. I seen posts here where a Coon killed a sleeping old cat. They personally killed near a dozen of my birds and only ate two. I am heavily biased only dumping them. You just give someone else that problem.

I myself would have a hard time killing them but I have friends that wouldn't. So I call them and just say I don't need to know about it.

I wouldn't relocate them. I know it seems like it would be a good idea but it really could be causing more harm than good. Good luck to you.
