Relocating trapped critters. How far away???

Well, if you don't mind them dying as expressed above, why not accept responsibility and euthanize them in a more humane way than predation, starvation, or death by vehicle?

Agree. Also, when you move an animal into the territory of other's of it's kind it's most likely going to be attacked and killed. Better to dispatch it humanely then create more suffering. Or just don't trap at all unless you are overrun with something. Secure pens and no food source for predators is a good start to preventing problems. That's been my approach and I haven't had the need to trap or otherwise kill a predator in years, no bird losses either.

Good thing I read on before posting, 2 feet was exactly my answer too.

My sister in law painted an orange spot on a coon she thought was coming back night after night while they were trapping . they hauled it several miles away-it was back the next night--they say they run a 10 mile range. Yea,just plink em!!!!

It only takes one person seeing your tag to call an 800 number and I assure you the game warden can and will find you...the fines can be steep. A Coon will travel 10 miles or more back to its territory, so at 2miles you might as well release critters in your yard.

Chipmunks and ground squirrels are not predators to chickens so just open the trap and release them .

Heres another suggestion: I neither "plink" them nor relocate them. If possible, shore up your pens and then you won't have to worry about possums at all - and you will sleep easier at night knowing your flock is secure. That kind of peace is initially a bit more work and money, but the peace of mind is priceless.
