Relocating

Well time for everyone to meet Earl. Earl has been crashing in our nesting boxes off and on for about a week now. He doesn’t bother the chickens just goes for the eggs. Eats all he can then curls up for his nap. This weekend we are going to relocate him to the woods farther away. I know they can be beneficial but not when he’s eating our eggs. I'll be the one person who says , I love this! Thank you for not holding it by its tail! That's the proper way to snag them. They are usually pretty timid creatures. Sure they can eat your chickens, but they much rather eat something already dead. Their only defense is to snarl and drool, and look mean. But most the time they rather not confront stuff. I've rehabbed 100s of them. Even had a non releasable one who live with me, right along side my cats and dogs. I miss that fat girl. She sure changed alot of minds about opossum. They are truly unique, alot of people dont even know they are marsupials!

She frequently snuggled with my pitbull, under the blanket in my bed. She was super clean, even taught her to use the litter box like a cat.

It's been a year or 2, but here is a batch of babies. I pulled them off of a dead mom being ate by buzzards. 2 boys and a girl. I took that batch to a rehab facility not far from me. Now anytime anyone comes across opossum babies, problems, or what ever they all call me. someone got to help out the wild life too!

Wow that is quite the picture, a pitbull snuggling with a possum! Love it! And I can't believe how pretty that possum is.

Found him last weekend. But because of work schedules haven’t been able to do much more than toss him from the coop. Did that last weekend today is the first day he’s been back. With the holiday coming I’ll have more time off to deal with him. Still have no clue how he’s getting in

In my experience, a possum can only kill/catch a chicken that is cornered, sick or sleeping, etc., otherwise the chicken can run away.

Given that they come out at night when chickens are sleeping... and most chickens live in coops where they can ultimately be cornered since they arent the best strategists...

If the coop is not locked or otherwise accessible, then yeah the possum can get a sleeping chicken.

If I was original poster, I'd be figuring out how the opossum is getting in, and fixing it. If you have opossum, then you normally have racoons. They are far more detrimental to a flock. Fix the predator entrance, and just kick the opossum out. So you dont need to re locate it..

Predator proofing a coop is easier, than trying to trap and kill them. They are a never ending battle.
