My poor little RIR has been battling pasted bottom since arrival on the 22nd of March. I have been checking her often and keeping her tush cleaned but she is straining terribly to poop and her vent prolapses slightly when she strains. Is there such a thing as chick laxative? Help! I don't want her to die!

I know there are lots of folks here who swear by molasses in the water. I'm not sure of the amount, but I'm sure if you search "molasses", you'll find what you need.

Good luck!

Have you been putting a lubricant on the outside of the vent to help prevent it from forming in the first place? By lubricant I mean vaseline, k-y jelly, veggie oil or olive oil.

Have you started providing grit? I've heard it can also help to reduce it. I would do that along with the molasses. Also, I'd call a farm or exotic vet and see if it is something that the chick should be brought in to look at. That seems like a SUPER long time for a pasting issue.

You are so right! I meant to say since arriving on April 22nd. Sorry. I haven't started with the grit so I will try that too. I have been putting olive oil on the tush after I clean it. Maybe something a little more heavy duty like the vaseline is required. Thanks.

I might suggest olive oil as an alternative or in addition to water to lubricate the digestive tract.

In my reading, grit was not suggested until 10 weeks but maybe there is a finer grit for young ones. I didn't do grit at all until the girls were 10 weeks old and introduced to more than crumbles.

You can also use a little white karo syrup boiled in their water. I tsp to a pint should do it. Like we use to do for babies when there was no premade formulas. hope this helps Jean

They don't need grit at all as long as they are only eating chick starter and i believe it has grit in it. As for the pasty butt issue lube her up and maybe trim the fuzz away from her backside on top of the lube. It usually only lasts for the first few weeks. There is nothing wrong with the chick, the key is to check for it often and get the stuck on poo off asap.
