Remembering the Chickens You've Lost

The first bird(s) are upsetting. Enough years go by and you won't be able to remember them all. Only the ones that somehow really stood out in their lifetimes get remembered. The others all become a blur.

I lost my little Cocoa Tuesday night :( The neighbors dog got into our yard and took her while I was at work. As much as I miss her I know my little Silky misses her more, they were practically joined at the wing since the day I brought Puffy home. The last couple of nights I’ve had to put Puffy to bed because she doesn’t seem to want to roost without Cocoa there. Cocoa isn’t the first bird I have lost but boy she sure will be missed…

Jose, my beloved sizzle, first victim to our coon nightmare

My two silkies. Also lost from our coon nightmare.

My lovely splash EE roo, lost on the same night as the silkies.

Our raccoon problem is now solved, but within a week I lost every single one of the chickens in my small flock(7 birds).

I'm sorry, that really stinks loosing ALL of them ? I don't know what I'd do if I lost my Whitey, she's the only one really that follows my every move when I'm outside, except for Bluefoot (one of my RIR) they both follow me, although they're both limping atm, whitey's gonna need bumblefoot surgery again (which i'm dreading again) & I think bluefoot *sprained her ankle* or something b/c its all swollen been that way for weeks...but no black dot on the bottom so I don't think its bumble.

But sorry I wish I could give you some chickies to replace yours, although I know pets can't be replaced

I don't have pictures of them on the computer i'm on, but i'll just give the names: Chowder, Scaredy Omm, Flapjack, Poachie, All 7 Henny Pennies, a 1 day-old D'Uccle chick, my 2 crossbeak D'Uccle chicks, and 3 teenage Americauna roosters. I'm sorry for all of your losses, thats for all of you people. May our little ones rest nicely in peace.

I lost my three Red Stars to ovarian cancer, all within 3 months. They were the sweetest, most affectionate chickens. Scarlet had surgery to remove the growths, but she succumbed a couple of months later. Here's a photo of her sunbathing near the front door in the "underoos" we improvised to keep her from picking her stitches out.

And the three sisters roaming the backyard they loved.

I miss them terribly. Chickens will change your life.

Oh my gosh, they ALL HAD OVARIAN CANCER??? dang, how much bad luck is that....how sad :(

Our vet says that 30-40% of production hens get reproductive track cancers by their 4th year, because of the stress of pumping out an egg every day in their first years. She thought the particular line our three came from might accidentally have a greater susceptibility. Since most production hens don't see their third birthdays, the breeders don't really have a reason to notice this.

Anyway, I try to focus on the parts where they'd snuggle up under my chin even when they were too big to fit more than just their head. They loved their hugs. :)
