Hi guys.. a few days ago we had a chicken die which we presumed was egg bound... she was subdued for a couple of days before but no dragging of her bottom from what I could remember. She just all of a sudden stopped moving, lay down and didn't get back up. She did have what looked like a blocked/gooey vent but not swollen.

Today it was noticed another one of our girls was dipping her bottom and waddling. When I got in from work I checked her over an noticed an obvious swelling around her vent. Called the vets in a blind panic who wanted almost £150.00 just to see her.. Now, I love her but think that's a little crazy to just walk through their door! Soooo I pop her in a bucket of warm water, suggested by a friend.. then pop her in a box on top of some boiling water (i read this somewhere once) Then I panicked some more...

Eventually I pulled myself together, donned some gloves and had a good look around! with the hot water and a flannel I cleaned the area and could eventually feel a hard lump.. egg maybe? the warm cloth must of been having some effect & rubbing around I eventually could clearly see it was an egg.. She started clenching so with the help of myself and my little assistant (my son) we delivered said egg... Poor Blacky Chan (my sons name for his bird) almost turned inside out getting rid of the naughty egg! She did bleed a little and then after it came away she did a couple of poops!

Is this good?? she walked off much easier after, still slowly but i'm guessing after what she just went through it would smart a bit!!

Oh and forgot to say we have 4 chickens, had 4 eggs yesterday and 4 eggs today! How has she got this huge egg?

I did squeel like id given birth when it eventually came away.. I do hope she will be ok, I will be devastated if she dies now :(

Picture of the offending egg next to one of our normal sized eggs :(

I dunno. I had a d'Anver prolapse a few weeks ago. We got the egg out and everything started staying inside. She was doing great, then she started going downhill so fast I didn't notice until I came down one morning to find her dead. From what I've read she had a 50/50 chance. But since yours didn't actually prolapse, she might be okay. I think all you can do know is feed her protein and lots of yogurt, keep her comfy and clean, and hope for the best. If the tissue won't stay in put some Prep H on it or even honey, but that doesn't work as well (IMO). If the tissue looks messed up, you might want to keep her in a dark place for a few days.

Best of Luck~Ms.B

she is the black one in my profile picture.. I'm not sure what breed she is, she was sold as a Magpie but im not sure if thats a real name for them?

Good morning! Blacky Chan seems to be doing well, I have just been to let them have a run around the garden.. she came out with the others and looks happy enough! She has a very dirty vent, it looks like a creamy coloured diarrhoea.. should we wash that?

Under the perch where she slept was a normal size egg with no shell just a very firm membrane. I hope this was hers & she is starting to get back to normal!
