We think one of our hens might have some sort of burrowing larvae in her tail feathers. How can we remove it? Please help!

Also, how does this happen and how can it be prevented?
Are they poisonous? Are they a sign of something worse?

Thanks!

We don't have any "dust" or know a place any where near us that carries it. Is there any where online to buy this stuff? Would be too long to wait?

Thanks

Try boiling two cups of water and add a cup of salt, stir until salt is absorbed. Let cool. Put in a squirt bottle like an empty detergent bottle and try squirting on area.

Or take a q tip and dip in Hydrogen Peroxide, rub on area and see if anything happens.

I don't have any pics, she's not very cooperative when we try to examine it! I guess we'll try to get her to the vet on Monday. If it's not a larvae then it might be a growth like an in grown feather if there is such a thing?!

I've had burrowing worms in rabbits before and always took a pair of tweezers and pulled them out and washed the hole out with peroxide. There should be a hole with the worm in it, about 1/4 inch in dia. Let us know what the vet said. Never heard of one in a chicken before.
