Here are two dog pens my dh changed into breeding pens for me. Since he has a broken ankle/foot he sat on a chair to wire the bottom thirty inches in welded wire so nothing can reach in and grab the chickens. Pens were built for dogs a couple years ago. When he built them he buried wire so nothing could dig in and get the dogs. (We have lots of predators here) The back ten feet is covered in tarp. We have tree branches for roosts in the back. He plans on building small coops in the back before this winter. He put the wire across the doorways so the chickens couldn't run out when I opened the gates. I have to step over and since I am only five feet tall he covered the top of the welded wire with white duct tape so it wouldn't cut me or catch on my clothing. We still have some fine tuning but this is going to work great. Last year we kept the extra roosters in the pens all summer long. In fact ,I have one roo (that we kept) who still wants to go there and stay. We have a very large dog who patrols during the nights.
Dh used those plastic wire ties to secure the welded wire. We are trying that method first. It seemed to work on other projects he has used for chickens. Pens are five ft tall, sixteen feet long and 8 ft wide each.

Nice pens!! Love seeing animals in big pens!! Looks like you're off to a great start.

thanks all. I was concerned over whether the pens would be large enough for them. I have seen smaller and these will do until we can get some better pens built. Just using what we have for the moment.

Hi Cyn, thanks for asking. He seems to be doing well. He goes back to have the cast removed next Thurs. We think he will go into a walking cast then but not sure as yet. I hope so as he is tired of not being able to put any weight on his foot and not getting around very well. Now mind you it was his left foot that was broken so he is able to drive and he has been driving to church and running errands and getting around with crutches now. I am sure he makes people look twice when he gets out of the rig and uses crutches

I am keeping up on Ivy and my heart skips a beat when I get an email saying you posted again of Ivy as I am afraid to look! I think my Lucy is heading that way. I pick her up and her whole abdomen seems heavy and hard and her keel bone is so prominant. she is three now. she is kind of listless on most days but comes to the house to come in and get into the dog food bowl in the kitchen. The dogs stand back and let her have first choice.

Aw, Carrie, that's too bad. Sounds like the same thing I've seen way too many times now.
