My wife got the 5 gallon RentAcoop waterer and I worry that they are not getting enough water. The water doesnt fill those little red cups, they have to peck at the silver ball and it just dribbles out. I sometimes go out there and hold the silver ball down and fill the cups up and they swarm it and drink a lot. That's what makes me wonder if they are getting enough.

Am I over thinking this and they are fine? I guess they are getting enough because they haven't died. They've been using this waterer for a couple months.

You're overthinking it, they would've died within days if they weren't getting enough water.

Also the water isn't supposed to fill the "cups" at all - this is why this style of waterer works in freezing areas. It's supposed to dribble out.

That said, hot weather I'd prefer to have an additional open water source just to make it easier for them to get the extra water they need to stay hydrated when it's hot.

Get some auto fill cups for summer (RentACoop will even sell them separately), then transition to horizontal nipples in fall once the weather cools. If you hate the cups, do what I do and use vertical chick nipples.

Either way, my flock will have to transition to horizontal. But as you've noticed, much less water comes out. Not a great match for hot weather.

I purchased the waterer and feeder set, and I really wanted to love them both. I use neither. The water in the cups gets too hot, even with the main container iced. The birds couldn't get to the bottom part of the feeder. So either I'm swapping out the old food on the bottom, or it eventually goes bad. The anti-roost tops are a great idea, and they are super cute..but for me they ended up being super useless.

Their water cups should fit in the same holes as the nipple drinkers, they do for their diy ones anyway. Our older girls never seemed to catch on with the nipple waterer, so we switched them out for cups. Don't waste the money on the cup covers. They make it harder to clean and dirt still will get in the cups. Their cup "liners" are nice in theory, but it just gives gunk another place to hide, so I took the removable cup liners out. Hopefully this helps you waste less money than I did 😄

Yep they do fit in the same holes. Same exact size as the nipple ones. But since I had extra I was like mind as well use the 4 sides of the bucket lol.
