Hello,

Just looking for advice from those who have rented pasture for livestock. I don't have the fenced acreage to house cattle/goats/emu/etc, but considering renting pasture for some. No giant herds or such, maybe 4-6 cows (or whatever that number scales up to if I go with goats or another animal).

Anyone here ever lease land for livestock production? A lot of questions but I'll save those until I see activity. Essentially, I'll start with - was it worth it?

Thanks..

we don't rent land but my grandparents have a guy who rents there land, he raises a lot of cows for market, so i guess its worth it for him (he has been renting it for like 30 years now lol) but he upgraded the fence and put in 3 ponds (with my grandparents permission), but he has had predator issues, mainly with coyotes and cougars.

There is usually pasture for rent on CL here from 5 to 25 acres
not a bad idea would be good if not too far away ? me too darn old

In my area, a lot of people rent pasture for their cows. If you rent, make sure the terms of the rental agreement are in writing. I cannot emphasize this enough.

I think you may run into issue with fencing, shelter and water sources. A lot of rental pastures are fenced with barb wire, which will not keep in goats. Many do not have a suitable shelter for goats, either, or an accessible water source. Not saying they don't exist, but you will likely have a hard time finding a rental property set up for goats. You will also need to have a plan in place for predators...

Something you might consider is electrified poultry fencing. It is portable and should keep out predators. Check to see if it can be solar. As for shelter, there are those fiberglass igloos made for calves. They come in various sizes, are portable, and many people use them for goats.
