Help please...this girl has been going back and forth for so long.
Months ago (February) she had a broken feather in her wing, we plucked it and kept her separate for a few days. No more issues for a few weeks then she was bloody again. Brought her in, bathed her, found the hole the feather was plucked from that was bleeding. Put meds on it and kept her separated for a week. All good.
Another few weeks same thing...I’ve tried vet wrap, a sock, a baby shirt. She tore it all off within hours. I use powder to stop the bleeding, I’ve used no pick & vetericyn. This has happened 4-5 times and she gets better, we put her out and then she ends up bloody again weeks later.
It’s always the same spot that’s bleeding, a hole where a feather once was. However this time she has plucked the
She’s doing it to herself and her friends help.

She is on Blue Seal layer feed (16% protein) and oyster shells are always available for her too. She lays regularly and outside this seems pretty happy.

I have no clue what to do for her to make this pattern stop aside waiting for fall for her to molt. I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of.

I would separate her from the flock. If you have Stop Bleed (if not it’s good to have on hand) when it starts to bleed again put some on where it’s bleeding!

Follow that advice. I would also up her protein intake for a while, just to see if that helps her stop plucking her feathers. Checking for external parasites would also be good.

I do have stop bleed and use it every time...but that doesn’t heal it or stop the picking. It’ll go weeks without bleeding then all of a sudden it starts again. I tried keeping her in a run by herself near the other birds to see if that would help it heal and she just picked it herself without help. It’s a viscous cycle and I don’t know how to fix it 😕

I’ve checked them all for parasites. Separating won’t help because she does it to herself too. I’ve tried bringing her in the barn and she gets stressed because she hates being alone (screams all day) so I tried a run next to the other birds and she still picked herself
I will get a higher protein food tonight!!

I would get some no peck spray! It’s again good to have on hand! There’s a kit if you get it from this brand!!

i don't know if this will work but you could try making her a cast out of a pool noodle to keep her from pecking that one feather. cut a slit in the side of the noodle and fit it around her wing, then wrap it up in duct tape. the duct tape will hold it together and keep her from eating the Styrofoam. she is such a beautiful bird, i hope this will help you :fl !

The others probably peck her because of the blood. Once someone is bleeding, it just draws them in. Is this the same feather every time? I'm wondering if the original one that got broken and pulled did not come out completely and there is a bit of shaft still in there and it's irritating her. If it's the same one every time then I'd have someone hold her and clean it out real well, look in the hole and flush it out and make sure there isn't any shaft parts in there. The rest of her looks pretty good, so mites seems less likely, but there are depluming mites that burrow into the base of the feather shaft and can be so irritating that they will pull their own feathers out trying to get relief. If it's not the same feather every time, then that might be worth considering.
