That is not entirely true. If you breed tufted to tufted birds there is a 25% chance the chick will inherit both tuft genes and die in shell. These stats are over many, many hatches. Earlier this year the president of the Araucana Club had a 95% hatch rate breeding tufted to tufted birds. That was probably all his luck in that one hatch though.
Breeding clean faced to tufted does not have this risk.
I agree, the dark color in him is a very shiny with a dark greenish black tint in the sun. He is such a nice docile rooster. I don't know if that is their normal nature for his breed or just because he got lots of one on one attention from me everyday? He is probably black breasted red, or a mix of colors.
That is their nature. I have yet to own, see or even hear of an aggressive Araucana male.I agree, the dark color in him is a very shiny with a dark greenish black tint in the sun. You ordered these eggs online, right? So they were shipped? That was probably the reason for the low hatch rate. Where are you located? I may know of someone close to you that breeds Araucanas. He was the only Araucana that hatched out of his set of eggs in the incubator. I have not tried to hatch anymore of them yet? I have researched and found that they dont have as high of a hatch rate if you mix a Araucana hen with a Araucana. I dont know if that is true or if it was just set of eggs I tried to hatch?
Yes I ordered them online. I have had a high hatch rate with all that I have ordered online except with the Araucanas. Thats why I was thinking it was the breed. But your right it could have had issues with the shipping. I live in a very rural area in north central arkansas up in the mountains with a population of about 300, because of this I have to order eggs or chicks when I would like to start a new group. You ordered these eggs online, right?
