Replacing my cock.

:thumbsup

How old are the chicks?
How long the the hens been broody?
Why only 2 per night instead of all at once?
I would think they may not keep taking them<shrugs>

I look forward to hearing about your progress....pics would be great.
-A couple of days old.
-If they didn't accept them, I didn't want to endanger the whole flock of them.
-So far, so good!

Looks ok to me - you will see how it goes with the birds, and will adjust if needed. But, hopefully all goes well.

We have a variety of breeds and our rooster is a BJG. He is big. I haven’t weighed him recently, but he was nearly 11 lbs at 11months old. He mates the females fine- they are not adversely impacted, it doesn’t appear. When I check to see if we have fertile eggs, many are fertile. We have 10 layers (ages 16 months, and 10 months), and 7 more just coming into lay (they are 17 weeks old).

He is overall docile, but he is going thru “puberty” and will hopefully settle soon -he is almost 16 months. They mature more slowly. He is attentive and tidbits for the girls, but it took awhile for him to do this, likely due to slow maturity. He has tried aggression with me s few times, but I think this was partly due to my winter boots (with laces). But he still gives me the stink eye and follows along the fence when I am walking and crows. He does not try to do anything to our tween kid, and is perfectly fine being handled. He does not crow a lot, which is nice. He never tries to fly out of the run either- he’s so big!

Because of his size, we are conscious of the roost height. Ours are ladder style and lowest roost is approx 16-18” above floor. He can get on that, then go higher easily. Same for leaving in the am, easy step down, to a *thud* when he hits the coop floor after jumping off the low roost. Coop pop door is large as well. Our coop is 2.5’ elevated above ground and he has to duck to get under it, but can stand up full under it bc he has to duck under the support beam.

Good luck!
