replacing rooster

The one i had to butcher was originally kept because of his friendly personality. Then my Iowa Blue rooster and my chantecler started picking on him. He was at the bottom of the pecking order and decided to take it out on us. By the time i separated him for breeding it was too late. He was already mean. He was a lavender so they're probably so inbred they dont have the same personality as the buffs and blacks. I dont handle my rooster anymore (except the bantam cochins). I find that if I ignore them their whole life they go about their business and do their jobs and ignore me.

I think the more you handle the rooster the more they think of you as one if their's. It may sound silly but if you are viewed as equally then you will be challenged for pecking order. The hens can be your friends but rooster should be aloof.
