I inherited an old cast-iron skillet that is just the right size for baking corn bread. I really like it, but have one problem. The wooden handle is finally falling apart. Can anyone suggest what kind of wood I should use?

Won't the wood handle burn in the oven? I bake my cornbread at 450.

Here it is:

The Original wood handle lasted a long time (I have no idea how many years) and that included cooking over an open fire. That's why I'm as asking. I have no idea what kind of wood it was so I'm asking for suggestions.

I know this is an old post, but if you're like me, you're still using that skillet with the broken handle. I have the same problem and found a solution. Check Ebay for "vintage pans". You will find all sorts of old pans for $5.00 or less, just for the wooden handle.
