Reptipro 5000 Hatch-A-Long (=

Another question: Those 2 that I helped out (the ones with the funky foot) aren't really eating or drinking well. I don't think they've actually eaten any scratch at all. I've still had to give them sugar water and sometimes I have to dunk their beaks a little. They are stumbly.

Any advice?

did you sprinkle some feed on the floor of the brooder?

I use black or dark brown shelf liner and the feed stands out against it.. for the first day mine don't do much more than peck at the feed anyway (still using up their yolk).. so i don't worry about it for a day or two.. then if they aren't showing much interest (which is rare) I'll tap at the feed with a finger.. if that fails I put some of the flat backed glass marbles in their food.. they usually peck at shiny things

if they still refuse to eat you can grind up some of the starter to a fine powder in a coffee grinder (a blender might work too) and mix some water into it.. use a syringe (minus the needle) and drizzle a bit into their beaks (basically force feed without using a tube)

you can also offer some crumbled up hard boiled egg yolk

I used to try and get them to eat right away. I frequently had babies with pasty butts. Then I found out that it is best to wait until they are 3 days old (2 minimum) to work the yolk thru. No more pasty butts. I never give mine sugar water. I don't know if it's possible to overstimulate them or not. I usually dunk their beaks once or twice. Once they get the idea (and the other more vigorous chicks will show them), I try to let them alone. Not to say I'm not constantly looking them over.
We had two dun Wyandotte bantams hatch yesterday. I've given them water (one spent more time in the shell than I like), but so far no food. They're zipping around today and drinking on their own. Hope the two slow-hatchers do ok.
