What about prefixes like rooster, hen, chicks, flock, waterfowl, cat, dog, goat, etc.

Or simply a text field for something like "Type of animal".

There are pros / cons to both.

With specific selections, we can create filters, reports, etc., because the variables are finite... but it's less flexible.

With open-text, it gives more flexibility, but less organization and options for sorting, etc.

I don't have a strong opinion one way or another. If we *can* find a finite selection list that encompasses 90% of the cases, I'd chose that over free-form text box.
