Hi again,
I posted earlier about four ducks I rescued and worried about the silver appleyard. Just tonight I was holding her and noticed that 75% of her feathers are broken off. I’ve only just had them for a day and she actually let me pick her up. I realize ducks molt and I was hoping someone could explain it to me.. do the feathers break like that? I was under the impression they fall out and regrow? This is my first year having ducks and I just love them dearly. I hope she is ok and not in pain. She looks just pitiful. Thank you for any advice.

When ducks go into molt their flight feather fall out completely and regrow, Maybe she was in too small of an area and it caused her feathers to break off like they are. They may stay like this until she goes into full molt but in the meantime give her and the others good feed and extra protein like a good quality dog or cat food and or mealworms as a treat. Feathers are protein so giving her extra can help even before her molt.
