Man Charged with Animal Cruelty for Abandoning Chickens

(09/29/07 -- GREENSBORO, N.C.) - A Browns Summit man who authorities say abandoned more than 40 chickens earlier this month is now facing 46 counts of cruelty to animals.


The Guilford County Environmental Health Department received a call last week from the property owner saying that he hadn't seen his tenant in two weeks and was worried about animals not being cared for.
A county inspector found several chickens and five cockatiels dead. Many were emaciated, and some had wounds from being pecked. The animals have been housed since at the Guilford County Animal Shelter.

Sixteen warrants have been issued against Darryl Keith Holt

charging him with felony cruelty to animals. Another 29 warrants charge him with misdemeanor cruelty to animals. One warrant charges him with feloniously allowing property under his ownership and control to be used for cockfighting.

Looks like it's mostly roosters and he was into cockfighting. But the story says that the hens might be adoptable.

Now, they should throw the book at the owner!!

The video says that, by law, if the roos were used for cockfighting, they have to be euthanized. The hens, if healthy and safe, will be adopted out.

That's so sad, especially that the roos could be fine if they were the single roo with a nice big harem of hens.
