and it's the saddest thing I ever saw! It was an ad on craigslist "hen for sale $10. We have no food" So I knew she was going to be a mess. She's apparently in her first molt, hard to know if that's true because her pshyical shape. They said she had been hit by a truck........looks more like she's been kicked to me.....her beak is bent (but she can eat well), one side of her face is lobsided, I don't think she can see out of one eye and she was literally skin and bones! They said they called her "Ugly Betty"!!! Boy, did I cry for this little hen! She's safe and warm now in a dog crate in my house. I made her a feece jacket that she seems to really like and she has food and water 24/7. I can feel that she's already gained weight in just three days. My kids have renamed her "Beauty". We are determined to get this poor little hen back to a healthy, happy life. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to care for such a sad little chicken? Anything to boost her immune system? Any special food I could give her? Right now, I'm mixing laying crumbles with medicated chick crumbles. She get a hard boiled egg in the morning and scratch in the evening. We also collect grass for her. I have taken some photos that I will post asap as I want to do a before and after thing.

Sounds like you're doing a great job! A little extra protein is great, like some chopped boiled egg yolks......Chickens really gobble that up! Maybe some vitamins/electrolites in her drinking water would be helpful to her as well.

Poor little hen. We'd love to see before and after pics!

Apple cider vinegar in her water may help.

From the sound of her previous keepers, they should have paid you $10 to take her!

Fingers x'd for you that she makes a healthy recovery and well done to you for taking her (and making her a little fleece jacket - cute!)

Yes, do posts pictures.

Thank you so much for saving this hen. You did a great thing
