Rescued baby from Feed Store, toe half torn off, what to do? *UPDATE*

She looks good! Just keep a good eye on her and keep her warm. She will want to hear the other babies. You seem to be getting great advice on medication.

and yes she can hear and see the other chicks. I have my brooder divided with 1/2" hardware cloth so they can visit.

Just wanted to add that when I was young - my grandad kept a can of blue-kote around- We used it for every kind of wound you could think of. I don't know if they still even make it or what specific brand name it would be. It was in a aerosol spray can and it was like spraying purple or blue ink on a wound . He swore by it. He used it on hogs, dogs, chickens, cows , and ponies and horses.

We got a chick like that from the feed store last year. We were fortunate that the other chicks didn't pick at it. They were on wood shavings so maybe that made it harder for them to see the injury. The toe eventually fell off on its own, and the hen has no problems with it.

Blu-Kote works well, I have had several guineas who have riiped nails off and if you clean the wound and the spray it with the blu-kote it acts like a styptic and keeps the others from pecking at the blood, 'cause it no longer looks like blood! Good luck and good job! Janet

Clean with the diluted betadine or chrorohexadrine (sp?) solution, put triple antibiotic ointment or cream on it, dry and cover like you did. I would remove cover after a day or so and spray with blu kote. Keep an area of cage with a towel or blanket for her comfort so doesn't have to walk on cage bottom, should be fine. It may stiffen at the joint from tissue damage or scar tissue and the result is she won't be able to bend that toe....no big deal....I have a couple with fixed toes from being broken as a chick.

If you use Blu-Kote make sure you are careful it stains EVERYTHING it touches includin you. It does work great tho. My leghorn was getting pecked a lot. After I used it she got left alone & got better fast. I found it at the feed store. Good luck. I hope your sweetie gets better real fast.
