Chicken math is happening. I hate math, but apparently I’m good at this kind. A friend texted, they almost ran over a baby chic that was walking alone down the road. She asked me if we would take her in. 😳 We’ve never had chicks. We bought tween/adult chickens. (we have 8 hens). BUT I had a heat lamp (I’m always trying to be prepared), extra food and water containers....so we put some of our pine shavings in a box, my husband made a lid and here we are. 🐓
1) What breed? I’m thinking Rhode Island Red
2) Age no idea ?
3) Gender? I’m hoping a hen!
4) She’s in a brooder we will get a friend in the next few day’s for her.
5) what’s the next step?!😫

A baby chicken isn’t something you find walking down the road everyday. But sounds like you have done well for the little one. Warmth, food, water and love is all they really need. But with out a friend it will get lonely so extra attention will be needed. Once it is fully feathered slowly introduce it to the rest of the flock. Keep an eye on it for acts of aggression towards it. After a few introductions with out incident I’d leave it to do its chicken thing with the rest. Remember a few pecks here or there is normal, it will have to earn it’s place in the pecking order. If it is a roo and you can’t have it or don’t want it, try to re-home or eat it.

I totally agree with you on the math thing; chicken math is the only branch of that science that I appreciate. Congrats on your new addition and good luck finding a suitable companion.

I don't know about you, but if I rescued the baby, built it a home, found it a friend, I would be too attached to let it go even if it was a rooster. And that's why Sir Henry, the surliest, loudest rooster in the world, still lives here in a coop with the only two hens that tolerate him.
