I got a call at work today, In regards to a Muscovy duck and a couple tiny chickens who needed an immediate home. Apparently, after our canadian thanksgiving holiday, word got around about our farm, I sold all of our turkeys in a matter of hours, and so people spread the word about our tiny poultry farm, and rescue groups took note of this. Well turns out a pack of wolves rampaged through someone's duck and chicken houses and these people did not clean up the carcasses, so the neighbours called it in and when they were asked about it, they said they really didn't want the animals anyhow. All there was left of 10 ducks and 16 chickens was 1 male Muscovy duck and 2 tiny chickens, one is a male and one hen. They might be some sort of bantam breed?? I am going to take some pics in hopes BYC folks can help me in figuring out what they are exactly.
Trouble is, I couldn't say no, for obvious reasons, these little guys needed a god home for one. But they are petrified, can't go anywhere near the duck and I know NOTHING about ducks, so I have been reading up. The good thing is the animals came with 100 pounds of feed and a sack of corn?? which I really do not feed any of my animals, so what to do with it is beyond me.
I cannot get close enough to the chickens, but I do see their little feet look like they got this black crusty stuff all over them, it is not mud though, and it goes up their legs. the duck's eyes are wet but its clear, no idea if this is normal or not. Right now Dh is out in the barn taking one stall and dividing it in two so we can quaranteen the birds. I need help because I truly have no clue about the duck. I have no feeders or waterers geared towards ducks, I was really taken by surprise but I rather have to scramble to fix something up for them then having said no and left them out to chance.
What can I put the duck feed in, and what about a waterer?? I was thinking maybe a couple shallow pans its only until friday when I get paid and I can get all the stuff they will require. I Will also need to get a second duck or 2 more because I know one thing for sure, ducks are social and he might feel better with a couple friends. Apart from the stench of the duck and his wet eyes he looks ot be ok, but really unapproachable, he opens up his bill and runs away or makes himself as tall as he can be.
It is likely they are just scared from the ordeal they have been through though. I hope it changes in a couple days!! I am trying to go through the endless duck posts though.
Thanks for reading and if you have any tips or helpful info, please post it. I would really appreciate it
