I got a call at work today, In regards to a Muscovy duck and a couple tiny chickens who needed an immediate home. Apparently, after our canadian thanksgiving holiday, word got around about our farm, I sold all of our turkeys in a matter of hours, and so people spread the word about our tiny poultry farm, and rescue groups took note of this. Well turns out a pack of wolves rampaged through someone's duck and chicken houses and these people did not clean up the carcasses, so the neighbours called it in and when they were asked about it, they said they really didn't want the animals anyhow. All there was left of 10 ducks and 16 chickens was 1 male Muscovy duck and 2 tiny chickens, one is a male and one hen. They might be some sort of bantam breed?? I am going to take some pics in hopes BYC folks can help me in figuring out what they are exactly.

Trouble is, I couldn't say no, for obvious reasons, these little guys needed a god home for one. But they are petrified, can't go anywhere near the duck and I know NOTHING about ducks, so I have been reading up. The good thing is the animals came with 100 pounds of feed and a sack of corn?? which I really do not feed any of my animals, so what to do with it is beyond me.

I cannot get close enough to the chickens, but I do see their little feet look like they got this black crusty stuff all over them, it is not mud though, and it goes up their legs. the duck's eyes are wet but its clear, no idea if this is normal or not. Right now Dh is out in the barn taking one stall and dividing it in two so we can quaranteen the birds. I need help because I truly have no clue about the duck. I have no feeders or waterers geared towards ducks, I was really taken by surprise but I rather have to scramble to fix something up for them then having said no and left them out to chance.

What can I put the duck feed in, and what about a waterer?? I was thinking maybe a couple shallow pans its only until friday when I get paid and I can get all the stuff they will require. I Will also need to get a second duck or 2 more because I know one thing for sure, ducks are social and he might feel better with a couple friends. Apart from the stench of the duck and his wet eyes he looks ot be ok, but really unapproachable, he opens up his bill and runs away or makes himself as tall as he can be.

It is likely they are just scared from the ordeal they have been through though. I hope it changes in a couple days!! I am trying to go through the endless duck posts though.

Thanks for reading and if you have any tips or helpful info, please post it. I would really appreciate it :)

oh, how sad. Some people... They are just jerks.

Corn is a good scratch source for winter... The little ones might need it to put weight on if they've been not feeding well the last few days... Catch the chickens around bed time and give them a good examination. You might be able then to see whats what on their feet and legs.

I do not know about ducks either... poor guy. Maybe you will be able to rehome him after you are sure he's not ill...

Good luck, and its awful good of you.

I use a shallow plastic bin, for my ducks waterer, and the lid for their food. You no not need any thing fancy. Although you might want to keep the duck from bathing in the waterer, so a shallow bucket will work, as long as he can get his whole beak wet. If the corn is cracked you can feed it to the chickens, and ducks as a treat, and in winter it will help their bodies stay warm! If he is a young duck, make sure what ever you use for the waterer, he can get out of it! I have Muscovies, and they do not need water to swim in, they mate on land and do not need water to mate. Yes ducks, especially Muscovies are very social! If you have any more questions, just ask! I don't think my ducks eyes look watery, or wet, so he might have a cold, or is very stressed. Remember they don't Quack, but make a strange hissing sound.
The chickens could have mites on their legs, they will get under the scales,if it is mites you can use Vaseline to try to smother them! Or it could be dried blood, from an injury, if you can get some pics try to post them, it will help.

well I think its out of my hands now..I did promise my kids some ducks next year, and they already named him....and by dh is quite taken by them too, lol, apparently the little roo went running to dh when he put down the food, and he was able to look at his feet, the stuff on them is thick dryed up feces. so tomorrow hey will get a bath and something to dust bathe in. I will be taking a trip to a farm out in the boonies that has ducks and hopefully she will be nice enough to part with a couple duck hens to keep him company. their are quite precious, I cannot believe the caliber of people out there that could care so little for animals.

We have the room, so why not!! pics are coming, just have to figure out how to size them in order to post them. Dh founf a solution for food and water until pay day, and the duck is now walking about wagging his little tail about, I think its cause my dh bribed him with green leaf lettuce and a kiddie pool (not happy its inside the barn but anything to make the little guy more comfy until we build a duck house and run)

I think my dh is a bigger softy than I am....lol...

UPDATE:: the Duck is not Muscovy, a search through the breed index reveals that he is a mix of some sort resembling between a Mallard and a Roeun but with darker colouring instead of the light grey in the underside. The little roo seems to be some sirt of bantam, looks a lot like an Old English Game but had a double comb...no idea on the hen yet and my computer/camera in being a pain so I am having a hard time uploading Sigh...
