Rescued Emu

Most of my Emu don't like Emu pellets.....they are in with my farm animals and want what everyone else is eating...lol. I do have a.barrel fixed to a.fence.with a hole cut in it filled with sweet feed....layer feed....dog chow...wild bird seed...for them to eat at random.....

‘pasture-raised’ – hmmmm . . .

Hey, E.S.!

I noticed ages ago, though it’s a fuzzy datum, that the tame-wild birds, who’ve had wheat since they were chicks, often stay at the wheat at the ground just a little after their (wild) consorts go back to ‘free-grazing.’

the latest rescued emu is now eating like a champ, consuming an a 50/50 blend of 20% protein all grain grower finisher pellets/12% protein sweet feed. An examination of its first semi-solid poops revealed large amount of broken glass, pebbles and thumbnail-sized jagged stones. Not sure how long the bird had been carrying all of these "foreign" objects, we know emus will sometimes swallow anything and everything they can. We make daily sweeps of our pens so we know that they were not picked up here. It is very possible that these objects were forming a blockage inside the bird and were at least partially responisble for the lack of any "productive" poop and the loss of appetite. Although, we do not have any idea what is left inside him (without x-raying), the bird appears to be in much better health!

Yes, E.S., perhaps we had best keep watch on this bird, to see if it thrives over time. Yes indeed, a ‘large amount of broken glass’ might foretell future related problems.

How sad that a critter should wind up in such a situation.

So glad your bird is doing better!

For E.S.,

Hmmm . . .

One: actual trooly rooly wild emus? Probably none left. Every wild emu has some relations to humans, if no more than eating on the pasture of an abandoned farm.

Two: a bird like Noddy, Felicity’s consort. He’s never had wheat or sultanas, and probably never lilly pillies either.

Three: my greedy spoiled birds.

This morning, E.S., just as a ‘speriment, I knocked down the day’s quota of lilly pillies at the same time as I put down the ration of wheat.
Result? Felicity stayed with the wheat. Noddy got up and went to eat lilly pillies.

The rescued emu is now feasting solely on a grower/finisher 20% protein pellet formula and he has a huge appetite. Its wounds have healed nicely and we are starting to see the beginning of feathers coming in over its large bald spot. It still needs to put some weight on its frame. We could make a nice mosaic masterpiece from the items collected from its poop: blue, clear, white, and brown glass, pottery shards (incliding white pottery with green patterns), pebbles of all sizes and colors, etc.!!!

Picked up additional glass and pottery fragments up to 1 3/4 inches long. The poor emu us still purging!
