A couple weeks ago we adopted three hens from a rescue group. They were rescued from a retiring farmer who was keeping several thousand hens in poor conditions, including insufficient food and water.
About a week after adopting them, one of them started hiding, was lethargic, and had reduced appetite. I noticed a bulge on the side of her foot, and decided to check her for bumblefoot. The bottom of her foot had a small black scab and some swelling; the side of the pad had a little swelling with a “horn” (pointy eschar) sticking out to the side; right above the horn was the round, squishy ball, visible when she’s standing upright.
After a week of treating her for bumblefoot, the infection and swelling on the bottom of the pad is looking better, and the “horn” came out the side of her foot today after soaking (turned out to be an eschar plug/kernel).
We still have no idea what the original bulge on the side of the foot is. It has not responded to the bumblefoot treatments, is fleshy/squishy, does not look red, is not warm to the touch, and doesn’t seem to bother her when we touch it/squish it. Starting to wonder if it is separate from the bumblefoot issue. Maybe gout, or a fatty tumor? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
