We have two rescued hens quarantined from our flock. They are four or five years old and their feet don’t look normal. They had some gnarly looking claws that I trimmed before taking this picture. I gave them a dose of Ivermectin two weeks ago thinking they might have scaly leg mites. Also applied Vaseline the first day after giving their legs a soak.

Does this look like scaly leg mites or something else? Or is this what the leg of an older chicken looks like? I don’t notice a difference in appearance now compared to when they first came to us. I was hoping at some point to introduce them to our young flock, but now I’m thinking it’s better to keep them separate.

Thanks for reading!

Yes, that looks like scaly leg mite to me. Did you really slather the Vaseline on nice and thick? I have used Vicks Vapour Rub to treat them on one hen and Protection Plus which is a pink greasy equine salve containing citronella on a rooster. There was a notable improvement in both just a few days after a single application, but I really lashed it on thick. It took a second application a fortnight later to bottom it. Both were significantly worse than your hen in the photo to start with.
