@feedman77 ...Where are you located?I have bought battery hens. in my area they area mainly isa browns and red sexlinks.
craigslist is usually full of them. about 6 to 8 dollars apiece.
the good cheap chickens.
the bad they are usually about 18 months old so they are getting ready to start a hard molt.
they will lay but it is severely reduced.
for most of their life they've been kept in climate controlled buildings. they don't deal to well with being outdoors rain and cold gives them bad nasal infections and colds.
I have lost several when they get a cold it's usually deadly.
the ones that have made it thru molt get beautiful 2nd set of feathers and lay extremely well.
what I have has a good life nice big coop. 80 x 120 run. and can free range on 15 acres.
I guess I take my chances with them but to me it's rewarding .
