Researcher and soon to be chicken owner

Hello Prose63.
Welcome to BYC.
It all looks good on paper and then the chickens arrive and you fall in love and all that thinking becomes some weird dream.
Just feed the chickens and let them do the thinking.;)

I agree that the danger comes when you get those tiny chicks and hold them in your hands. Their "peep peep" just melts your heart. But you try to stay strong as you check them for pasty butt. You turn to your partner and before you can stop yourself you say "I'm so glad Priscilla 's butt is clean!"

Cull them for meat later? Maybe. "Peep Peep."

welcome to the madness!

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us :ya

Enjoy your new adventure. Flavor in birds come from good food/forage and time. It's a trade off that you will have to learn to balance. 8 week old CX raised at my place taste way better than anything you can buy in a store are are extremely tender. Two year old hens have a much stronger and better flavor and are very tough. Tough to process and must be cooked low and slow to make it tender. Six month old cockerels are right in between. Best of luck. If you'd like some instructional videos on how to process I can steer you to them.
