Mid-June in Florida and you're worried about them being warm enough? I'm all for arguing with unreasonable men but in this case, I think he's right. The coolest it's likely to get would be mid-70s and I'll bet it doesn't even go that low.
I am the world's biggest worrywart about fire hazards and such -- gotten much worse since I was pregnant and painting the nursery when I noticed the nearby electrical outlet smoking! Old wiring tends to make you jumpy.
When we got our newest chicks, I bought a heat lamp but didn't end up using it. Instead, I used a desk lamp with a 60 watt bulb. It has a swing arm that hangs over the top of the brooder, and I've kept a close eye on the chicks. They're never huddled up under the light, and we haven't lost any.
I understand his concern for his family, but a) the chicks and light are going to be in the coop anyway and b) hundreds of people on this forum have left lights running 24/7 for weeks or months without fires. Of course we have to be responsible and use common sense, but there's no reason why it can't be totally safe. You're a better woman than I am -- I would have told my husband to get over it and bought the stuff anyway!

Reading it now. Also, Hiya neighbor! You're about 25 mins from me!
Awesome, stop by sometime I'll show you 'round.
After reading your thread I am concerned you may be cheating with my man! LOL
I think I will be ok not buying anything to keep them warm at this point. If they start huddling together I can start to cry and then my fiance will surely agree to using a small light of some sort...
I mean like the above poster said I am in FL and by mid june it is sure to be ambient temps in the 90s daily! I'm brooding them in the hen house! DUH!
Heck in Florida you might be able to get away with hot water in milk jugs. They'll cozy up to it like a mother hen. Just watch very closely for leaks, as you don't want wet chicks.

Yeah for you- HEY WAIT A MINUTE....
Well anyhow in the end I moved them outside in March at 4 weeks and they did fine, all 8 of them...
Of course I -do- have impossible to break broodies here... 'hint' 'hint'
Seriously consider the ceramic heat emitters sold for reptiles. I have 2 of the big ones running for my snakes for years at a time...no fire, no breakage, they are worth the investment.
