Hello, looking for some help with our hen. Monday she was wheezing, sneezing and scratching her head. She is 10 months old. We started her on Chlortetracycline Monday night (per the Vet), Tuesday she was happy, eating drinking, layed etc. As of Wednesday she has been declining. We have been syringing her the water/antibiotic mixture and making her treats to eat. The Vet has prescribe another antibiotic so waiting on this but it has to be shipped. We don't have any expert Avian Vet's so the one we have is kind of at a loss. Has anyone experienced this? Wondering if it is the antibiotic making her sleepy but usually it's suppose to make you feel better. Thank you!

Can you post some photos of her?

Any swelling of the face, mucous, watery/bubbly eyes or eyes with pus. Any lesions inside the beak? Ears clear of pus/infection?
Scratching the head - have you checked for lice/mites?

Is she eating/drinking on her own at all?
Does she lay eggs?
Any chance she got into something toxic or moldy?
How old is she?
Have you added new birds in the last 30 days?
Is she new to you?

You may want to talk to your vet if the medication may be the cause of her being sleepy. Chlortetracycline is used to treat respiratory disease in poultry like Mycoplasma.

Thanks for responding. All of her physical appearance is healthy, no mites/lice, eyes and ears are clear. She does drink a little on her own. She is not really eating on her own, she is 9 months old, and we’ve had her since she was a chick. She did lay once this week. No new birds either.
We actually found another vet so
She is getting checked out now. Thank you!

What did the vet say?

Peanut passed away this afternoon. :(

The Vet took an X-ray and thought it was pneumonia . She also thought it could be an enlarged liver but was sending the X-ray out to a specialist. The Vet gave her an anti-inflammatory which we gave to Peanut and continued the antibiotics. It must have been too late.

she was the sweetest chicken...our daughter is crushed.

:hugs I'm so sorry to hear that.

What a sweet photo, your daughter giving her comfort, that's priceless :hugs

Thank you. She loves her birds. She had classical music playing for her today. I think she is relieved that she is no longer suffering and we tried everything we could to save that sweet bird.
